qualities for good leadership

company cultureEmployees are increasingly seeking companies that are fun workplaces and jobs that are meaningful. A  company culture that appeals to those who want to make an impact on the world and feel great while doing so (such as Google and Facebook) has been invaluable in recruiting top prospects. Needless to say, if your company lacks a great company culture, it can be difficult to recruit top talent.

Think your company could use some company culture improvement? Here are six suggestions that could make a difference in fostering and creating a great company culture. Talking about culture is easy, but building one is a challenge that any organization can meet with the right approach.

  1. Follow the leader. Culture is cultivated by leadership at all levels. Seek employee feedback to get an understanding of what motivates your team, and offer small rewards.
  1. Prioritize excellence over mediocrity. Don’t just give out bonuses! Award bonuses to employees who are top performers to push them to do their best work. It will push others to perform better, as well.
  1. Walk and talk. In a world filled with texts, emails, and messages, many companies lack vital face-to-face conversations with employees. Having in-person discussions will make employees more creative and collaborative.
  1. Stop working in a box. Boring beige walls, harsh fluorescent lights, stiff office chairs…this kind of office space is unlikely to house happy, creative employees. Get your employees out of their desks and into creative and collaborative spaces as much as possible.
  1. Subtract to add. Poor and negative employees not only drag the company performance, but make the entire workplace attitude plummet. Stop the spread of destructive attitudes and poor work ethics by letting underperforming employees go.
  1. Looking for the Next Big Thing. No matter how good you are, you can always be better. Look for and hire top talent; injecting this talent into a company will drive not only culture but performance as well.
